Artist Statement
In this video and photo saturated world, painting still speaks to me in a distinctive and special way. Life and this world are fast, and painting slows it down. Lately I have been painting more with acrylic but watercolor is my native tongue. In terms of technique, the fluid washes, sedimentation, and layering evoke sensations that seem natural to me and the landscapes I paint. My philosophy is to seek out and capture the unique beauty, mood and felt emotions that identify a place for me. I relish the seduction of representational painting, and yet I feel an urge to explore a slightly more abstract and experimental approach. I am interested in how science and technology frame the way we experience and interpret the natural world. Fleeting views and a combination of both synthetic and rough mark making help me describe a connection with nature based on views from moving cars and photographs. Imperfect and flawed realities, mixed emotions, careless and messy treatments, alienation, memory, as well as organic textures, beauty and child-like expression all play a role in this work. I am finding that the environment, and our relationship in it, is complex. |
