It's commonly held knowledge that an artist should avoid symmetry whenever possible in a painting. And I agree with that for the most part, especially when first starting out, but there are times when I think symmetry is the only way to get a certain feeling or idea across. In this case the dock creates an inviting path, and the orderliness of the dock and boats offsets all the mallards in the foreground. It felt right so I wen with it.
