In Grand Marais there is rocky point jutting out from the campground that receives much less traffic than the popular Artist's Point. At the very tip there are often hundreds of seagulls perched. I'm not sure what attracts them to that particular spot, but it's definitely theirs and when an intruder like these kayaks come by they really make a scene of it, squawking and flying in circles; nobody passes by undetected. I wanted to capture the serenity of the figures, water, and light, and contrast that against the energy and rhythmic movement of the gulls.
Casein is a watermedia based paint made from a milk lactate base. It has a creamy texture and lends an airy quality to a painting.
