This backlit scene turned the white aspen trees blueish purple and combined the warm yellow foliage into a unified curtain, screening a bright light piercing through an otherwise overcast sky. There's something about a woodpile in front of a stand of trees that has a poetry to it that I can't quite put my finger, on but draws me in every time.

St. Joe has such a charismatic downtown strip! I love the morning light on the buildings with their bright accents of color, and the telephone poles and wires add to the excitement of the scene for me. I hope you like it because even though it was a nice day I froze my a*# off painting it!!!

I drive past this scene often after dropping my kids off at daycare, and it seems like no matter the lighting or weather conditions, it draws me in. It's something about the wide road and big view of the sky. Really enjoyed tackling this sunrise scene!

 These are brief moments when the rays of sunlight stream through from behind the clouds, creating a very dramatic and almost surreal scene. As I pay attention more to these sorts of thing, they actually happen more often than I realized.

First Snowfall 11-11-21

What follows is an experience that, as a plein air painter, happens frequently - you have a plan worked out on where you want to paint and then somewhere along the way something catches your eye and changes your path for the day. In fishing they say "Don't leave fish for other fish". So I guess the takeaway is that if there is a good, paintable subject in front of you, embrace it! I had plans of painting fresh snowfall on some urban structures (and still plan too), but this scene with the tractor and fresh snow on the popple trees was too good to pass up! 

Visually I relish these times when conditions completely transform the world around us. Although overcast and a bit drab, the contrast of the snow in the landscape was inescapable and unbelievably inspiring!
