Products

 This striking lighting condition where the foreground is in bright sunlight and the background in shadow happens on the partly cloudy days, but it is s fairly hard situation to paint plein air because it's ephemeral:  here one second and gone the next.  I took some photos as reference and the lighting came and went enough times to get the gist of it.  Very inspiring scene!

With the low cloud bank there is a patchwork of sun and shade on the landscape. It makes for dramatic imagery,  depicted here is a familiar view but with the foreground in shade and the background highlighted. Fun to experiment with these different conditions and the snow/ ice/reflections were fun to attempt.

Compost Pumpkins

The warm orange pumpkins against the intense blue snow in shadow created an unexpected contrast, drawing my eye in and keeping my attention long enough to appreciate the striking light and shadow pattern unifying the scene.

It was simply too windy to paint out in the open so I sought shelter in the woods.  A small opening in the trees allowed a bright patch of sky to shine in and break up an otherwise shadowed forest.

As I was finishing the first painting, the sun came out and cast a complex array of light and shadow in the woods. Soft edges with a vignetting effects alongside starkly lit branches reminiscent of a photo negative. Confusing to try to make sense of in a painting but extremely inspiring at the same time. Will definitely be doing more of this type of scene in the future!

 I love these simple scenes: a medium dark dirt field,  deep dark trees silhouetted against a warm late afternoon glow along the horizon, with a big sky dominated by a clean and airy grey mass of clouds.  Big, simple shapes seem to offer a bit of freedom to bring out the nuance in the scene.

Along Glacier Road

I've passed this little outbuilding many times and this is the first time I stopped to paint it. It seemed too obvious or something to paint, but after digging into it ai realized it wasn't just about the quaint little building. The horizon has so much variety in it,  with red oak,  popple, and pine among many other.  Also the shapes of the road and slices of land have a zip zag movement and energy to them that offsets the very still structure. I guess the lesson learned is to trust your eye. Beautiful scene.

River Reflections

It dawned on me that I haven't painted a whole lot of water this month, so I figured I'd head to a quiet spot along the Sauk River and see what there was to see.  I found the perfect amount of ice along a mossy shoreline, bridging the ripple filled current and the backlit trees above.  The scene reminded me that it just doesn't take a whole lot to make a good subject for painting. Just some willingness and a little time. Grateful for that 🙏

Each passing car kicks up an atmospheric cloud of dust,  masking and fading the background into a warm and mysterious haze, while simultaneously bringing the foreground into focus. A privilege to spend time in this place and to paint.

The sunrise yesterday was electric,  with vibrant orange highlights fading to pink in the higher altitudes,  a purple cloud base, and an intense green-orange sky near the horizon.  A beautiful start to the day.

End of the Season

A boat on shore feels like an invitation; the dramatic perspective of the foreshortened vessel pulls my gaze to the lake, and the sight draws my imagination into a daydream of paddling, fishing, and soaking in a quiet moment on the still water,  with each drop of water echoing concentric ripples. But alas, it is November and the lake is frozen, raincheck it is.

Sunrise with Christmas Lights

Im really happy with how this turned out. Originally I had some concern about whether the light in the sky would compete with the lights on the tree,  and I wondered if the tree lights would even show up legibly unless the sky were really dark. I think since the xmas lights were against a dark tree it gave them just the right amount of pop without taking away from the much stronger sunrise.

Morning Shadows.  

You can see the influence of Russian painters again here with the dramatic foreground shadows..

Our chicken coup grain bin has been the source of a few paintings,  and I still am completely confused as to what color it is. Obviously it's a grey blue, but there was so much warm light on it this morning that it actually took quite a bit or orangeish green mixed in to create a convincing effect. It's all relative I guess 🤷‍♂️
